How to Create a Family Command Center

This year both of my children are in school. I honestly thought the days would be less busy once they both started school, but 4 months into the school year and I realize I was totally wrong.

Both my kids have decided to participate in sports and multiple after school offerings. While I’m happy that they are active and want to be involved in things, it’s a lot to manage. I was keeping track of everything in my agenda and transferring it over to a small wall calendar. But it was looking chaotic.

This past weekend I decided to set up a command center in our kitchen. I opted for 2 calendars ( a monthly and weekly) so the kids and my husband could see the weekly breakdown of events and times, along with the monthly appointments etc.

I’m also ordering a file organizer (it hasn’t arrived yet) for mail, the kid’s school work and items to be filed.

Along with the calendars and file organizer, I am adding a modern wall sconce by Hyemla Lighting. Hyemla Lighting gifted me this versatile wall sconce. It has a shelf, charging station, key hooks and lighting, I think it’s the perfect addition to a command center.

I chose a wall in our kitchen to temporarily set up the command. In the future, when we makeover the kitchen I have some great plans for this area, but for now- a command center is a must.

The calendars are magnetic, but I added Velcro to the backs so they could adhere to the wall.

The shelf does have a plug, and I used a wire concealer to hide the plug. I opted out of painting the cord to match the wall, because my kids will be near this area often, and completely concealing the cord seemed the best solution.

I’ll share an update when I add in the file organizers, but I’m hoping for now our new command center will help everything feel a bit more calm in 2024.
