DIY Spray Painting Tips for Bathroom Hardware

Recently, I decided to spray paint the tub hardware in my kidsโ€™ bathroom. I used Behr Premium Spray Paint, in Champagne and Gold. I decided to mix the two spray paints in order to match my existing gold hardware on the bathroomโ€™s vanity and faucet.

Iโ€™m sharing a few tips to make this process easy if you decide to spray paint the hardware in your own home.

1. Clean the metal surface.

– Itโ€™s important to make sure the metal is clean and dry.

2. Protect the area you are going to spray paint.

– Itโ€™s important to account for overspray. I used plastic sheeting (which can be reused) and taped it around the hardware but also at least 12 inches in all directions.

3. Use a spray paint with primer, or prime your metal before spray painting.

– This will just ensure that the spray paint will adhere to the metal.

4. Allow time for the spray paint to set between coats.

– I applied 2 coats of each spray paint I used, totaling 4 coats of spray paint. I waited at least 30 minutes between coats to let the spray paint settle and see how the coat was distributed.

5. Use a sealant to lock in your spray paint.

– I applied 3 coats of polyurethane to each piece of hardware. I wanted to make sure the spray paint would be sealed against water, bathroom cleaner and the wear and tear the kidโ€™s will put on them.

Itโ€™s been over a month since I sprayed the hardware, and Iโ€™m really happy with how it turned out and how itโ€™s holding up.

    1. Thank you! Yes, I went with a more matte finish to match the faucet and vanity hardware which has a brushed gold finish. Glad it translates the way I was hoping!
