DIY Accent Wall Painting Tips

One of my most popular DIY projects to date is the accent wall I painted in my kid’s bathroom. If you weren’t following the project when I was working on it, you can click HERE to see the process, and HERE to see the reveal.

I thought it would be nice to share a few tips about painting an accent wall, if you decide to try it yourself.

  1. Sand down any bumps or imperfections:โ€‚First, I fill any holes and sand down any rough spots.
I use the color changing spackle, so I know when it’s dry and ready to sand.

2. Wash the wall before you begin: I use a washcloth with warm water. Then I wiped the wall down and allow it to dry. This gets off all dust and dirt before you begin.

3. Make a plan: Creating a color sketch of the idea helps me to see how the idea will work in the space, and if any changes need to be made before I start to work on the actual wall.

For this project I took a photo of the space and used my iPhone to draw on the wall and plan the color layout of each paint.

Block out time: Having uninterrupted time to work helps to focus on the design and limit mistakes.

Having the quiet moments to paint each individual line in this design was key.

Use the correct paint: My last tip is to use the correct paint. I’ve seen some people use acrylic paint on their walls, although this is an option, I prefer to use house paint. I like to pick the finish that matches the rest of the wall finishes in the room. For the accent wall I used satin finish interior wall paint. I diluted the paint with water to achieve a slightly lighter tone of white and mixed the white paint into the grey paints to achieve lighter hues of grey.

If you had any questions about the process or a space you are thinking of working on, please leave a comment and I will do my best to help.
