1. Make the Room Function for your Child:
When I began designing my daughter’s room I first asked her what she wanted to do in her room This helped me to map out zones in her room that would function for the various things she wanted to do in her room. Like a reading space, a homework area etc. (If your child is young, you will know their habits enough to designate the right spaces for their daily activities). Having zones in the room will help you decide furnishings and room layout.

2. Make the space easy to transition:
Although my daughter hasn’t made it to the double digits age wise, I know that time isn’t far off; so I didn’t want to buy her furniture that would need to be replaced in a few years like a twin bed, which would need to be upgraded to a full size bed, or a child sized desk, which would also need an upgrade. Instead I invested in furniture items that will transition over multiple phases of childhood, making the changes to the room over time less costly.

3. Ask their opinion, and let them help:
Nothing is worse than a space your kids don’t use. Allowing them to have a say in the design process makes them more connected to the room and the decor that’s added to it. Having my daughter weigh in on her favorite picks for decor items and choose the colors of her room (she did not want any florals and was very against patterns, no matter how many I showed her) gave her a sense of pride in her room. She also takes a lot of care for the items, because she feels like she helped to design it.

Beyond her weighing in on my design choices for her room, I also had her help me with a few DIY projects that made her room feel special too.

Overall I think designing a kids room is very fun, but beyond the aesthetic of the space the function for the child living in the room has to be the top priority.

Oh my gosh I *love* everything about this post!! Having her envision how she would use the space, and participate in designing her own room, sound so empowering for her. I love the artwork with the positive mantras. And you both did a beautiful job! You *must* do a YouTube tour describing same. Can’t wait to see what’s next!
Oh my daughter would love to do a YouTube tour. Haha. Be like the kid vloggers she watches.
