It’s time!! 8 weeks in the making and it’s done (well almost, but I’ll talk about that later in the post). If you’ve been following along, I have been participating in the One Room Challenge, where designers, DIYers, and anyone up for the challenge transforms one room in their home. I chose my daughter’s room.
When we moved to our new home it marked the end of her sharing a room with her brother and began her transition to a big girl room. With her input, I began planning her room. I knew she would need a reading area, a study/work area, and her bed in the space, all with enough room to play when her friends come over.
Here are the images of her room before. The first things I knew we would change were the paint color and the ceiling fan.

My daughter wanted grey and blush tones in her room and was very adamant about keeping the patterns to a minimum. She wanted solid tones and to feel relaxed in her room, so nothing too bright or bold.
When thinking about her bed area I wanted it to be simple but comfortable. She picked out her bedding and I added artwork and throw pillows based on her bedding choice. She requested an alarm clock and I also added a more decorative tissue holder for her nightstand. I love her sconces and will be sharing more about them in a post later this week. They are remote operated using puck lights

Originally I had ordered light-up curtains through Pottery Barn, but when they arrived the material was thin and didn’t feel of quality, so I changed course and found these adorable blackout layered curtains with star cutouts from Amazon. They add just enough sparkle without needing lights and once her window shade is installed will be the perfect covering for her window.

I added a bench to the end of her bed for storage. The deep drawers allow her to store a lot of toys for easy cleanup. I also fold up her throw blankets in the cubbies, so they aren’t thrown all over the room. I purchased all of the pulls on her furniture from Etsy. Even though her furniture is a mix of Target and Ikea finds, adding the same type of pull to them makes the furniture feel more unified.

For her reading area, she requested a comfy chair. Because of her age, I didn’t want to purchase an armchair, I wanted it to be comfortable but still youthful. I chose a softer-feeling Papasan chair and a round velvet throw pillow to mimic the circular shape of the chair. I knew I wanted a mid-century-modern style bookshelf for the open shelving mixed with the large bottom drawer ( again, thinking of toy and game storage). My daughter helped paint the planters and I found some cute faux succulents to add to them. She also chose all the family photos to add to the frames. The bookshelf will grow with her and I look forward to seeing what kinds of books she begins filling it with.

Her study area was really all about finding a desk that would transition through high school and finding her a chair that was comfortable but matched the feel of her room. I found both at IKEA, the desk needed to be painted and the pulls needed a change of color but the size, shelving, and drawers were exactly what I was looking for.

One of my favorite parts of her desk is her lamp. It’s a fillable lamp, so she and I filled it with various tones of pink and white gemstones. Then I added in fairy lights. At night when she shuts off her light, she can switch the fairy lights on and they act as a night light. I’m going to share more about the process in a later blog post.

I have loved designing my daughter’s room and making it everything she wanted. Seeing her so happy as she enjoys all aspects of her room makes it a success for me!
During this 8 week challenge the only things we didn’t manage to do was add crown molding and complete the accent wall I had planned for her reading area. We do plan on tackling both projects just not until after the holidays, so I’ll be sure to take photos and share once both projects are complete!
