Design Details

This week I was watching “Fixer Upper the Castle” and Joanna Gaines said she “always tells the story of the family” or house. That really resonated with me, because I struggled last week with figuring out what to do with my daughter’s room past the initial furniture purchases. So I sat down and besides thinking of her likes and dislikes for her room, I started to think about how I wanted the room to feel and the “story” it would tell. My daughter is beautiful and brave, she is quiet but full of joy. I want her room to feel soft and beautiful, but with hints of eye catching design elements that will reflect those brave joyous moments in her personality.

I went to the At Home store (they color code their store and I love that, it makes it a first stop for me) and found some great wall decor and small accessories – like throw pillows and items to place on my daughter’s bookcase.

I also shopped online for a new rug to replace the one I bought a few weeks ago that didn’t fit the color scheme and finally found a pair of curtains that are black out for function but still cute for the design of the room.

I searched Etsy and found some digitally downloadable art, that I was able to print at Walmart’s Photo Center, at a large format of 11×14 for 16×20 frames.

On Overstock I finally found a ceiling light to replace her ceiling fan. I also decided to faux cane her nightstand and bench, so I ordered the cane and will be changing their look in the next few weeks once everything arrives.

The last thing I had to do this week was paint and spray paint anything we bought or that didn’t fit the color scheme although it may have fit the style and function we were looking for. I used Gold spray paint on the light fixture parts, frames, pulls, mirrors and the legs of her chair. I painted the wall decor white and blush to match her bedding and then began painting her desk. Painting her desk – changing the color from beige to white, was the most challenging this week. I used a 6 inch foam roller and a small detail brush and still had to do multiple touch ups to eliminate any brushstrokes. Overall I’m happy with the look of it, although down the line I would like to change the file cabinet style pulls.
