Front Door Decor

This weekendโ€™s small project was a fun one. I found 2 planters at the At Home store on sale. Although I loved their shape- the color wasnโ€™t going to work.

I also found these faux boxwood plants on sale at Hobby Lobby. Since the planters will be close to our front door I am opting for faux plants- I donโ€™t want too many real plants on our doorstep. Later when we add to our front yard we will pick live plants. Since I was looking for faux plants I was happy to come across these boxwoods.

To level up the planters I knew I would be using the same Behr exterior paint in black and white that we used for our garage doors and front door. I sketched 3 design ideas, and talked them over with my husband to decide which we should go with.

In the end we chose the simple color block pattern, so as our decor choices change over time and during the holidays the planters will lend themselves to the decor and not compete with it.

When painting the outside of the planters, I applied 2 coats of paint and also made sure to paint the rim and a generous amount of the interior as well, so that the new paint color would look seamless.

To secure the boxwoods into place we used a series of zip ties that we secured to the plastic caging inside the boxwood and to the base of the planter. We then added in large stones to give the base more weight and to make the boxwoods sit firmly in the planter. I love the overall look, and feel it fits the aesthetic of our home.
